1. What is the purpose of this digital monument?

This digital monument honors and commemorates all victims of the wars in Afghanistan from 1978 to the present. It provides a space for reflection, information and recognition for the millions, who lost their lives either defending the land of Afghanistan against foreign invaders or as defenceless victims of the conflict.

The coup of April 27, 1978 carried out by the People’s Democratic Party is considered the beginning of a human tragedy for Afghanistan. Since then violence began to structurally impact large parts of the country.

Victims are categorized by Afghanistan’s provinces. Within each province, visitors can find names, events, and contextual information, where available.

Where possible, names are listed, provided the information is available and verified. In many cases, the victims are part of larger, anonymous groups, whose identities remain unknown. But their suffering is still acknowledged.

AVR collaborates with historians, human rights organizations, local sources and diaspora communities to gather and verify reliable data. The information is continually being developed and updated.
